More academics have joined the Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the
recent call for the scrapping of the National
Universities Commission, NUC.
The latest is coming from a veteran
educationist, Professor Emeritus, Joe Alagoa
who stated that NUC as an agency had ran
out of ideas.
Professor Alagoa told Dailypost that NUC
was no longer relevant to the Nigerian
University system.
According to him, “I think NUC is not doing
the system any good. I mean, you can’t go
to a University and tell them what to teach.
NUC has ran out of ideas. They just send
people to universities. They say they are
assessing teaching system and so on.
“Whereas they themselves know that
funding is not adequate, facilities are not
adequate and students are not being taken
proper care of”.
The professor of history in the
University of Port Harcourt
suggested that federal and state ministries
of education could deliver the responsibility
of NUC.
He recalled that NUC altered the curriculum
of the University of Port Harcourt when it
was established.
“You have ministry of education that has a
monitoring system and then there is NUC.
So what will the ministry be doing. As I
said, the government don’t need a body
like NUC in Nigeria.
“When we set up UNIPORT, we had this
idea of structure and delivering education
at a very low cost. They came and canceled
it because they brought the idea of
everybody must teach the same thing”, he
added.
Alagoa appealed to the ASUU and the
Federal Government to source for a lasting
solution to the 3-month old strike.
