Inspector General of police weds today (photos)

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr
Mohammed Abubakar, on Saturday
married, Zarha, the daughter of a one-time
FCT Minister, Mr Ibrahim Bunu.
The wedding “fatiha’’, which took place at
the National Mosque, Abuja, was
conducted by the Chief Imam of the
mosque, Ustaz Musa Mohammed, who
prayed for the success of the marriage.
Dignitaries at the wedding include Vice-
President Namadi Sambo, two former
Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida
and Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the FCT
Minister, Alhaji Bala Mohammed, and
members of the National Assembly.
The reception, which was held at
the ThisDay Dome in the city-
centre, was attended by Gov. Ibrahim
Dankwambo of Gombe state, the Acting
Governor of Taraba, Alhaji Garba Umar,
Senators Andy Uba and Paulinus Igwe.
Others dignitaries at the reception include
the former Chief Security Officer to late
Gen. Sani Abacha, Maj. Hamza Al-
Mustapha, business moguls Aliko Dangote
and Femi Otedola as well as Chief Akin
Oshuntokun, a former Managing Director of
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Alhaji Adamu Bello, who spoke on behalf of
the bride’s family, described the turnout
for the marriage as “fantastic’’ and
expressed gratitude to the Allah for the
event.
Bello urged the couple to live according to
Islamic tenets for the success of the
marriage.
In his remark, Oshuntokun also noted that
the large turnout was a reflection of the
goodwill which the I-G had from all the
nooks and crannies of the country.

Revolution has started in Nigeria-Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, Friday
stated that a revolution has started already
in Nigeria and it will not stop until the
needed holistic change, which all Nigerians
are craving for is realised.
Fayemi stated this yesterday while speaking
at the official launch of the All Progressive
Change, APC, in Ekiti State at Oluyemi
Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti.
The governor said the APC was no longer
an opposition party but an alternative
government, which the nation has
graciously accepted.
According to him, the FG is now
the opposition part, which has
been trying to impeach an elected
government at the state level.
“You can see what they have done in Rivers
State, trying to remove a democratically
elected government there,” he said.
He added that change has started in Lagos,
Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Imo, Zanfara,
Yobe, and Borno states, stressing that very
soon, it will spread across the country.
“Our party, APC is the alternative party and
if you go to Lagos, Ogun and all these 11
states where APC is fully in control, you will
see these positive changes we have been
talking about.
Earlier, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun
State said “change is the main thing
Nigerians are asking for now. APC is that
change, which they are seriously yearning
for. The nation cannot continue like this,
there must be a change.”

Brain-eating amoeba found in tests of water supply where boy died in Louisiana

(CNN) -- Tests of a Louisiana parish's water
supply confirmed the presence of a rare
amoeba blamed for last month's death of a
12-year-old boy.
The state's Department of Health &
Hospitals said Thursday the Naegleria
fowleri amoeba , which causes a generally
fatal brain infection, was found in tests of
St. Bernard Parish water conducted by the
federal Centers for Disease Control.
The water is safe to drink, state officials
said, although they continued to caution
against getting water in the nose, the route
the amoeba takes.
The parish water supply came under
suspicion because its chlorine levels were
low. Chlorine kills the amoeba, said state
Assistant Health Secretary J.T. Lane.
Lane said the parish, along the
Gulf Coast southeast of New
Orleans, began flushing water
lines with chlorine last week, a
process that will continue for
several weeks until chlorine
levels reach recommended
levels.
A Mississippi boy who had
played on water slide made
out of a long sheet of plastic
while visiting St. Bernard
Parish contracted amoebic
meningoencephalitis and died
last month. Tests at the home
where he was playing found
the Naegleria fowleri amoeba.
Officials say less than 1% of patients
survive the infection. But 12-year-old Kali
Hardig survived after contracting the
amoeba in July, possibly at a Little Rock,
Arkansas, water park.

Prince William to leave military service, will devote time to charities

(CNN) -- After more than seven and a half
years of military service, Prince William is
leaving the armed forces to focus on royal
duties and charity work, Kensington Palace
said Thursday.
William was a pilot with the Royal Air Force
Search and Rescue Force. Known to his RAF
comrades as Flight Lt. Wales, he had been
stationed at a search-and-rescue base on
the remote Welsh island of Anglesey since
2010, and lived there with Catherine, the
Duchess of Cambridge.

In the next few weeks, the pair will move
into their official residence at Kensington
Palace. The palace statement said that
William is considering a "number of
options" for public service.
For now, he will focus on his
royal duties. He will also
expand on his conservation
work, dealing particularly with
endangered species.
Kensington Palace announced
he will become president of a
new collaboration among
seven environmental groups.
The group, United for Wildlife,
will focus on fighting the
illegal wildlife trade.
William will also focus on
charities that deal with
children, veterans and service
members.

William's final search and
rescue duty was Tuesday. "He
and his crew had an
uneventful 24 hour shift," the
defense ministry said.
"Throughout his tour his
airmanship, often in the most
demanding of conditions, has
contributed directly to saving
lives in the mountains of
North Wales and from the
ravages of the Irish Sea. He has earned the
respect of all who have worked with him as
a highly professional and competent pilot,"
the ministry said.
Last year, he helped save a teenage girl
who was in danger of drowning off the
coast of Wales.
The 16-year-old girl was caught in a rip
current and rapidly losing strength. William,
the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II, had
just landed a Sea King helicopter nearby,
after going out on a routine exercise, when
the alert was radioed through.
In less than a minute, he and the crew had
reached the scene and a paramedic was
winched down into the sea to assist the
exhausted girl, who had just gone under
water.
Royal baby photos: Cozy or just bad?
There's no suggestion that William, 31,
would ever drop out of public life, but he
does crave normality. The prince gets some
of that from his role in the military where
he's treated as "one of the guys," but he
also gets it from Africa.
Dreaming of Africa is one way that William
escapes from the stresses he faces, he said.
"I regularly daydream," The Duke of
Cambridge reveals in the CNN
documentary, "Prince William's Passion:
New Hope, New Father," which airs later
this month.
"Africa is definitely one of the places I go
to ... I have hundreds of animals on my
iPhone. So if I am ever having quite a
stressful day ... you can put a buffalo on in
the background or a cricket," he says.

Jonathan sacks Education minister, 8 others

President Goodluck Jonathan has
reshuffled his cabinet, dropping nine
ministers.
The ministers affected are Ruqayat
Rufai (Education); Zainab Kunchi
(Power, [state]); Buka Tijani
(Agriculture [state]), Shamsudeen
Usman (National Planning; Ita Okon
(Science and Technology); Olugbenga
Ashiru (Foreign Affairs); Ama Pepple
(Lands) and Hadiza Mailafia
(Environment).
Nigerians had long expected President
Jonathan to rejig his lackluster cabinet
which has largely failed to deliver
services to the Nigerian people.
But while the expectation mounted, Mr.
Jonathan repeatedly dispelled
speculation that he had plans to fire
non-performing ministers.
Last August, he unveiled a rating
procedure known as Performance
Contract Agreement for ministers but
said he would not use the result of the
assessment in considering who to fire.
Mr. Jonathan said the assessment would
only appraise his administration’s
performance and delivery of targets to
Nigerians.
“I read all kinds of thing in the media,
that the president wants to assess the
ministers so that he would know who
would go and who would stay. That is
not the purpose of this.
“We would have done it probably in
the first week when we came on board,
but the key thing is that we have given
ourselves points that we think we will
get at, we believe that if we get at those
points or even if we achieve 70 per cent
of that, at least it will be better off for
our own country,” the president said.
According to the president, the exercise
was to ensure enhanced performance,
transparency and accountability in
governance, adding that it is not a
witch-hunting exercise.
“I want to assure every one of you who
has taken part in the exercise that this
is not a witch-hunt targeted at
anybody,” the president said in his
remarks after the signing ceremony.
