Dozens of people were injured as more
than 130 vehicles were involved in a series
of crashes on the A249 Sheppey crossing in
Kent today. The crash which went on for 10
minutes as cars continuously collided with
each other was caused by a thick fog.
According to eyewitnesses, visibility had
been very poor at the time of the crash but
drivers were
approaching the crossing with no lights.
One witness said:
‘You would hear the screeching of brakes
and then a thud. It was all you could hear
for about 10 minutes – crash after crash
after crash.’ The whole top of the bridge is
full of mangled cars and lorries. There are
cars with their roofs ripped off – one is five
feet in the air. There were a lot of people
trapped.’
The accidents left at least six people
seriously injured and 200 suffering minor
wounds.
No one is believed to have died in the
crash.
