He was shot dead in front of his
pregnant girlfriend, and police said
that it was his own father who pulled
the trigger.
Indiana police arrested David
Carrender, 49, on Sunday after his 19-
year-old son, Wyatt Carrender, was
gunned down at the family home in
Martinsville. Police said that the
younger Carrender was shot six times
by his father with a handgun
following an argument about
watching football on television.
Sabrina Canfield, who is three
months pregnant, told police that she
watched as her boyfriend was shot
outside an upstairs bedroom by his
father. She said that David Carrender
drank 10 beers and several whiskey
shots while watching football at a bar
with Wyatt, who was his designated
driver.
According to court documents, the
Carrenders began arguing at a Buffalo
Wild Wings in Indianapolis once
Wyatt insisted that it was time to go
home. David Carrender wanted to
stay, and they argued in the car on
the way home.
Upon arriving home, the dispute
escalated and Wyatt Carrender head-
butted his father, sending him
tumbling down some stairs. Police
said that's when the elder Carrender
got his gun.
According to the Indiana Daily
Student, Canfield told police that
before he pulled the trigger David
Carrender said, "I always knew I was
going to have to do something like
this.”
WISH-TV interviewed a neighbor,
Tony White, who said he heard "four
or five" gunshots.
"I heard what I assumed was the
young boy's girlfriend scream. She
was asking him (the father) why he
had done it. She was just in terrible
shape," White told the station.
David Carrender confessed to
shooting his son and was arrested on
a preliminary murder charge. He was
held without bail Monday, according
to Morgan County Sheriff Robert
Downing.
