A Staten Island, New York man, who fatally beat his wife because she
did not want to pay more for premium TV channels, while she was in bed
in the hospital, died after choking on a piece of chicken he ate for
dinner.
Thomas Scala, 58, choked as he was at home on Brighton Street in
Tottenville. He choked on the chicken he was eating and was taken to
Staten Island University Hospital, where he died.
He was buried, the same day he was to be sentenced to five years
probation after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide for
causing the death of his wife, Blanche.
“He got what he deserved,” the victim’s sister, Gloria Sellitto, told
the news media. “It was a chicken. Chicken got served to him.”
“It’s karma,” she continued. “If there is a God, he was punished. He choked on a chicken.”
Scala beat his wife in the head with a can of peas after a fight at
his home in New Dorp Beach. The wound caused bleeding from her head
injury she suffered at an earlier time from this man, and she died the
next day.
“She raised two wonderful children, and would have been a grandmother in a few months,” said an emotional Sellitto.
On Monday, the district attorney’s office of Staten Island listed the case as “killed by death.”
